Definition of the Issue: The death penalty is a criminal sentence that exicutes a person for very serious crimes, such as rape, homicide, torture, treason, kidnapping, larceny, and perjury. Some say that the death penalty is a good thing because it will reduce crime such as rape, homicide, etc, because it is used as a deterrent to other possible criminals. Others say that it is wrong and is an inhumane to punish criminals for what they did no matter how serious the crime was. They also believe it is a violation of the 8th amendment that says that no cruel and unusual punishments may be given to a person no matter how serious the crime.
